This is not sponsored advice or a paid safety directory. These are the practical tips we actually give Hero guests, friends, and family after more than a decade living in Tamarindo.

Start Here

Use Common Sense

Tamarindo feels safe and friendly, but petty theft can happen anywhere tourists gather. A little awareness goes a long way.

Safety

Mind Your Belongings

Petty theft, not violent crime, is the real risk — and it's easy to avoid.

Beach BagsDon't leave phones, jewelry, cash, or electronics unattended at the beach or in cars.
PassportsPhoto your passport and keep the original in a hotel safe when possible.
Night WalksStay aware and avoid dark, empty areas late at night.
Beach VendorsBe friendly, but book tours and activities through trusted operators.

Money

Cards, Cash & Tipping

Credit CardsMost restaurants, hotels, and tour companies accept cards.
US DollarsWidely accepted. Smaller bills are easier; change may come back in colones.
Tipping10% is often included. For good service, adding another 10% is appreciated.

Water & Heat

Hydrate More Than You Think

Is the water safe?Yes — tap water in Tamarindo is generally safe. It can be heavily chlorinated, so bottled water may be easier on some stomachs.
The heat sneaks upSun, alcohol, beach days, and activities add up fast. Drink water before you feel thirsty.

Packing

Bring These From Home

SunscreenBring more than you think — quality sunscreen is expensive locally.
Bug SprayUseful at sunset, near vegetation, and during rainy season.
Water ShoesHelpful for waterfalls, river crossings, and rocky beaches.
Reusable BottleGood for beach days, tours, transfers, and walking around town.
Light ClothingBreathable clothes, sandals, swimwear, and a layer for AC.
Offline MapsDownload your map before arrival so you can get around easily.

Getting Around

Town Is Simple. Day Trips Need Planning.

In TownRestaurants, shops, bars, cafes, and beach spots in central Tamarindo are usually an easy walk.
Outside TownWaterfalls, hidden beaches, volcano activities, and boat tours usually require transport and timing.

Local Etiquette

Be a Good Guest

HotelsBe considerate of other guests, staff, quiet hours, and visitor policies.
RestaurantsService moves slower than big US cities — relax into it, you're at the beach.
TownEat local, tip well, use trusted operators, and treat the town like someone's home.
